In her essay, “Decolonizing a food system: Freedom Farmers’ Market as a place for resistance and analysis,” Gail Myers writes, “This marketplace was named to honor the work of freedom fighter Fannie Lou Hamer. In rural Mississippi, Fannie Lou Hamer started the farm cooperative called the Freedom Farms.” After reading Monica White’s piece on the freedom farms of Mississippi, can you draw some specific comparisons between the forms of resistance practiced by the Freedom Farms in Mississippi and the forms of resistance practiced at the Freedom Farmers’ Market in Oakland? What are the key points of comparison? Are there also contrasts between these two “freedom farm” initiatives that you can identify? Cite specific examples from the texts and Monica White’s lecture (coming up on April 21) to support your argument.
Reflection essays ·
You are responsible for submitting three two-page single-spaced reflection essays throughout the semester that directly engage the readings and respond to specific prompts. These reflections are designed to help you analyze and synthesize key concepts from the readings and from lecture. Each reflection should be a concise, first person 800-1000-word analysis, directly responding to our readings, lectures, and films. Outside sources are not expected. A rubric for the reflection essays will be provided in bCourses. As you write, consider:
• Argument and support: Do you clearly state your thesis or argument? Do you support your thesis with materials and examples from course readings, films, and lecture? (1 point)
• Analysis: How directly and thoroughly do you address the prompt? Have you avoided summarizing and engaged in robust analysis? (1 point)
• Applicable content:Have you adequately and appropriately engaged all of the applicable assigned readings, films, and lecture material? (1 point)
• Originality:Do you creatively share your original views? (1 point)
• Writing style:Is your essay well written and concise, giving attention to diction, syntax, grammar, and spelling? Is your prose engaging? Have you limited your response to no more than 800-1000 words? (1 point)
